Lüne Abbey

Chapter of Lutheran conventuals

Kloster Lüne, a historic convent, is situated in the city of Lüneburg in Lower Saxony. It is renowned for its long history and well-preserved architecture, offering insights into monastic life over centuries.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Lüne dates back to 1171. Originally established as a Benedictine convent, it evolved into a significant local institution within the Lüneburg Heath. The nuns often came from influential Lüneburg patrician families and received a comprehensive education. In 1380, following a devastating fire, the monastery was rebuilt in Brick Gothic style. The monastic structure underwent changes in the 15th and 16th centuries due to the monastic reform of 1481 and later by the Reformation. Despite these upheavals, Kloster Lüne continues to exist to this day.
