Maria Engelport Abbey

The Maria Engelport Monastery was founded around 1220 by Knight Emelrich von Monreal, who settled Cistercian nuns from Kumbd Monastery. This initial community was short-lived due to insufficient support. A second foundation occurred in 1262 under Philipp von Wildenburg and Irmgard von Braunshorn, who brought Dominican nuns from an Ardennes monastery, including three of their daughters, to Engelport. On August 28, 1272, the nuns transitioned to the Premonstratensian Order. From 1275, the monastery was under the supervision of the Abbot of Sayn Monastery. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was largely devastated by Swedish troops, with only the cloister and church remaining. Under the leadership of the mistresses Elisabeth and Regina Elisabeth von Metzenhausen, reconstruction took place in the 17th century. Until its dissolution in 1802, up to 25 choir nuns lived at the monastery. A notable figure was Margaretha Kratz von Scharfenstein, who served as mistress from 1450 to 1532 and was particularly dedicated to the poor. The blessed Beatrix, likely a daughter of Philipp II von Wildenburg, was also an early prioress. Following secularization in 1802, most of the buildings were demolished, and the site was used for agriculture until 1903. In 1903, the Oblates OMI acquired the property and erected a new building in Neo-Gothic style between 1904 and 1906. The monastery was consecrated in 1906, and the church in 1920.

Maria Engelport Monastery is situated in the Flaumbach Valley, a side valley of the Moselle, within the Cochem-Zell region of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 152 meters above sea level.
