Kloster Maria Friedenshort
The Maria Friedenshort Monastery, a Cistercian priory subordinate to Heiligenkreuz Abbey, was canonically established in 2018 at the initiative of Görlitz Bishop Wolfgang Ipolt. It is officially known as the “simple priory of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Neuzelle.” Initial plans to locate the monastery within the historic Neuzelle Monastery were abandoned because the historic site is owned by a state foundation. Instead, a new monastery building is currently under construction in Treppeln, a district of Neuzelle.
History+
The historic Neuzelle Monastery was founded on October 12, 1268, by Henry the Illustrious and settled by monks from Altzella Monastery. The first monastic complex was occupied in 1330. In 1429, the monastery was destroyed by a Bohemian army, and the monks who refused to convert were martyred. In the 16th century, a potential dissolution was averted, but during the Thirty Years' War, the monastery again suffered looting and destruction. After the Congress of Vienna, the monastery fell to Prussia and was dissolved in 1817. The site was subsequently used for various purposes, including as a Prussian school and a Catholic seminary. Since the 1990s, efforts have been made to re-establish a religious community, culminating in the canonical establishment of Maria Friedenshort Monastery in 2018.

Currently, the convent consists of eight monks. In addition to the Cistercians, the Handmaids of the Holy Blood have established themselves on site since 2022, and the Thuine Franciscan Sisters since 2024. Construction of the new monastery building is scheduled to begin in 2026. The Cistercians are responsible for parish and pilgrimage pastoral care in Neuzelle.
