Kloster Maria Rosengarten

The monastery was founded on January 8, 1513, by Helena von Hohenzollern, who received permission for a women's monastery according to the rules of the Third Order of Saint Francis. Initially, land near St. Verena Parish Church was acquired, and a convent house was built. Helena von Hohenzollern herself entered as abbess but passed away in 1514. She secured the monastery's financial endowment through her morning gift and permission to keep livestock on the communal land. The nuns operated a linen weaving mill, cared for the sick, and educated girls. In 1707, a second wing was added, and in 1711, the sisters received permission for their own house chapel, which was consecrated in 1717 and decorated in Rococo style in 1763. The original main wing was rebuilt in 1761 after being damaged during the Thirty Years' War. In 1806, the debt-free monastery was secularized, and its assets were confiscated. After a brief resettlement by school sisters from Menzingen, who had to leave the country due to a royal decree, the Congregation of Our Lady Poor School Sisters of Rottenburg acquired the monastery in 1863 and operated a state-recognized domestic science vocational school there until 1991.

Maria Rosengarten Monastery is located in Ravensburg, in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, at an elevation of approximately 651 meters above sea level.

After its dissolution in 2007, the monastery was acquired by the city of Bad Wurzach and extensively renovated until 2011. The historic house chapel remains publicly accessible and continues to be used as a chapel. The buildings now house a nature conservation center, a library, an archive, and rooms for associations.
