Marienberg Abbey

Around 1125, the Marienberg Monastery was founded and placed under the Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias. It was consecrated to Saint Mary. From the mid-15th century, following a monastic reform, the convent was headed by its own abbess. A devastating fire in 1738 led to its reconstruction in Baroque style. In the course of secularization in 1802, the monastery was dissolved and subsequently converted into a cold-water sanatorium. After World War II, the Ursulines used the building as a monastery and school until 1981, after which it largely stood vacant.

The Marienberg Monastery is situated at approximately 105 m above sea level in Boppard, a town in the Rhein-Hunsrück district of Rhineland-Palatinate. The complex is located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

The structural condition of the former monastery is poor. The former monastery garden is now known as Marienberger Park and serves as a local recreation area. The traditional Orgelbornkirmes is celebrated there annually.
