The Marienburg Monastery, a historic Augustinian canonesses' foundation, is situated in the town of Abenberg in the Bavarian district of Roth. It is noted for its extensive history and regional significance.

History+

The foundation of Marienburg Monastery, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, occurred after 1142 by Wolfram von Abenberg. In the late 15th century, around 1495, the remaining nuns from Königshofen an der Heide Monastery relocated here. The monastery was dissolved in 1806 as part of the secularization process. In 1826, the citizens of Abenberg acquired the monastery church, which then became a filial church. Most of the monastic buildings were demolished in 1830 after being auctioned off in 1826. In 1920, members of the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows established their German motherhouse at Marienburg.
