Marienfließ Abbey
Kloster Marienfließ in the Prignitz region of Brandenburg, Germany, was formerly a Cistercian nunnery and is the oldest convent in the area. The preserved brick monastery church is now situated within a park-like setting and is utilized by the Evangelical Church as a residential care home for the elderly.
History+
The foundation of Marienfließ Monastery took place in 1248 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its establishment served strategic objectives of the founding family, the Gans zu Putlitz, who aimed to secure the border with neighboring Mecklenburg. Following the Reformation, the monastery was transformed into the Protestant Marienfließ Abbey. The monastic operations were finally dissolved and secularized in 1945.
