In Burlo, a district of Borken in North Rhine-Westphalia, is the Mariengarden Monastery, a Catholic monastery that now serves as a private school.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to 1220, when a first oratory was built. Between 1242 and 1245, it was owned by the Cistercian monastery of Marienborn, before being settled by Wilhelmites from the Netherlands in 1245. The name Mariengarden first appeared in documents in 1398. In 1447/48, Pope Nicholas V ordered its retransfer to the Cistercians.
