Karmeliterkloster Marienthal (Hamminkeln, Germany)

The monastery's origins date back to 1256, when Knight Sueder von Ringenberg settled Augustinian hermits on his estate. Initially founded as the Oratorium Ten Beylar on the Issel river, the site was relocated to today's Marienthal due to flood risks. The monastery church of St. Mariä Himmelfahrt, a single-nave brick building in the Lower Rhenish Late Gothic style with a 5/8 choir closure and a small roof turret, was consecrated in 1345. Following the secularization in 1803 and the dissolution of the monastery in 1806, large parts of the complex were demolished, and its inventory sold. Only a 17th-century wing of the cloister survived, which now houses a stained-glass window by Heinrich Campendonk. In 1839, Marienthal became an independent parish, and the monastery church was named Mariä Himmelfahrt. Under Father Augustinus Winkelmann, from 1924 onwards, Marienthal developed into an important center for contemporary sacred art, offering a creative space for artists of Rhenish Expressionism. In 1986, Carmelites took over the pastoral care and re-established the monastery.

Kloster Marienthal is located in Hamminkeln-Marienthal in the Wesel district, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 32 m above sea level.

Today, Kloster Marienthal is the northernmost branch of the German Carmelite Province. Five religious members lead the Marienthal parish and undertake other duties in the surrounding area. The monastery church continues to serve as both a parish and monastery church. The church's west facade features three sandstone figures created in 1939, depicting Mary with the Child Jesus, Saint Monica, and Saint Augustine.
