Marienthal Monastery

The foundation of Marienthal Monastery dates back to 1137, initiated by Adolf I von Saffenberg, who, as vogt of Klosterrath Abbey, authorized the establishment of a monastery in the Hubach valley along the Ahr. Following land clearing, 37 Augustinian nuns from the mother house in Klosterrath moved into the new facility. The first mass was celebrated in 1138, and the monastery church was consecrated in 1141. Over the centuries, the monastery evolved into a significant institution, with its nuns often originating from the lower nobility. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex suffered severe damage from looting but was rebuilt starting in 1699. The secularization under Napoleon led to the dissolution of the monastery in 1802 and the sale of its buildings, which were partially dismantled from 1811 onwards. Ownership changed hands multiple times in the 19th century until a Prussian State Winery Domain moved into newly constructed buildings in 1925.

Marienthal Monastery is located in Marienthal, a district of Dernau, within the Ahrweiler district of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.

Today, the ruin of the Baroque monastery church presents an impressive sight, with its exterior walls partially overgrown by ivy. It serves as a backdrop for various events. In addition to the church, parts of the cloister, the east and north wings, and remnants of walls from other buildings are preserved. The abbess's house, a Rococo garden pavilion built in 1762, also remains. In 1925, buildings of the Marienthal Winery Domain were added to the historical remnants in the style of monastic cloister buildings, creating an inner courtyard now used for gastronomy. Barrel vaults from the 12th century house a wine cellar. In 2012, a burial vault was discovered beneath the cloister.
