Michelfeld Monastery, a former Benedictine abbey, is located in the district of the same name in Auerbach in the Upper Palatinate. It is a significant example of a historical building that has undergone various uses over the centuries and now houses an important social institution.

History+

Michelfeld Monastery was founded in 1119 by Bishop Otto I of Bamberg. The complex was dedicated to Saints Michael and John the Evangelist. Throughout its history, the monastery experienced several phases of dissolution and restoration. An initial dissolution occurred from 1556 to 1661/1684. The final secularization took place in 1803, after the monastery had already been placed under electoral administration on March 13, 1802. The magnificent monastery church, richly decorated in Baroque style by the Asam brothers at the beginning of the 18th century, has since served as a parish church.
