Michelsberg Abbey

The foundation of St. Michael's Monastery took place in 1015 by Bishop Eberhard of Bamberg, shortly after the establishment of the diocese. Initially conceived as an episcopal proprietary monastery, it was directly subordinate to the Bishop of Bamberg. Monks from Amorbach and Fulda invigorated the new abbey. The monastery experienced its first golden age in the 12th century under Bishop Otto, whose canonization in 1189 further enhanced the site's significance. From the mid-13th century, Michelsberg Abbey gained increasing independence from the episcopal see. In the 15th century, monastic life was temporarily reformed by the Kastl Reform. Throughout its history, the monastery was involved in several conflicts, including the plundering in 1435 by the Bamberg citizenry, damage during the Peasants' War of 1525, and occupation during the Thirty Years' War.
