Franziskanerkloster Mittenheim

Farm estate, refugee accommodation, private residence

The former Mittenheim Schleißheim Monastery, a significant architectural monument in Bavaria, is located near Munich. This historical site of the Franciscan Reformists bears witness to the Baroque architecture and monastic history of the region.

History+

The Mittenheim Schleißheim Monastery was founded in 1702 by Elector Maximilian II Emanuel of Bavaria and dedicated to Saint Francis in the Hermitage. Court architect Enrico Zuccalli shaped the architectural design, particularly of the church, whose construction began in 1717 and which was consecrated in 1722. The church was conceived as a central dome structure with a transversely oval floor plan and included six chapels. Later, between 1735 and 1737, Joseph Effner added a high altar, bringing the rotunda to a total of seven altars. From 1790, the Franciscans of the monastery took over the court parish of the electoral Schleißheim Palace. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1802, and the church and the original Francis hermitage were demolished in 1804 and 1805. However, the monastery buildings largely remained intact and were later used as an economic estate and refugee accommodation. In the 1880s, the heraldic artist Otto Hupp lived in parts of the complex.
