In Bavaria, the Münnerstadt Monastery is an Augustinian monastery known for its continuous monastic operations and its library, which is one of the largest collections of Christian literature worldwide.

History+

The Münnerstadt Monastery, dedicated to Saints Michael and Augustine, was founded in 1279 by the city of Münnerstadt. Following the devastation during the Peasants' War, the monks had to flee to Würzburg, and the monastery remained uninhabited until 1652. Unlike many other institutions, it was not dissolved during secularization. The attached gymnasium, which had closed in 1803, reopened as early as 1806. The convent played a special role from 1895 as the starting point for the re-establishment of the German Augustinian province under Father Pius Keller.
