Muri Abbey

The foundation of Muri Abbey took place around the year 1027 or 1030. It was dedicated to Saint Martin. After its establishment, it developed into an important Benedictine abbey. For over a century, Muri functioned as a double monastery until the Benedictine convent of Hermetschwil separated in the early 13th century. The abbey acquired extensive properties and rights in various cantons. In the 17th century, Muri experienced a period of prosperity, becoming the wealthiest abbey in Switzerland. In 1701, it was elevated to the rank of a princely abbey and even acquired a territorial lordship on the Neckar. The abbey's existence concluded in the late 12th century when it was dissolved and secularized.

Muri Abbey is situated in the municipality of Muri in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. It lies at an elevation of approximately 490 meters above sea level.

Today, Muri Abbey serves as an important cultural center. The Abbey Church of St. Martin, which combines Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements, houses five organs regularly used for concerts. The cloister is renowned for its stained-glass cycle. Since 1971, the Loreto Chapel has served as the burial site for the Habsburgs. The other buildings within the complex are used for various purposes, including a school, administrative offices, a public library, and a nursing home.
