Kloster Neuendorf

district

The former Cistercian convent of Neuendorf, situated in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel in Saxony-Anhalt, represents a significant historical ensemble. The complex, located within a linear village, stands as a testament to medieval monastic culture in the region.

History+

The first documented mention of Neuendorf Monastery dates back to 1232. It was a Cistercian nunnery that became one of the largest landowners in the Altmark during the 14th century. Margrave Johann initially gifted nine hides of land to the newly founded convent, followed by the entire remaining village in 1233, including all rights, mills, pastures, and forests. Following the dismissal of the last provost in 1544 and the transfer of administration in 1545, the monastery was finally dissolved in 1579. However, it continued to exist as an evangelical ladies' foundation until 1810. The associated domain was dissolved in 1831, and the estate was sold.
