The former Augustinian canons' monastery of Neunkirchen am Brand, dedicated to Saint Michael, was founded in the early 14th century. It shaped the religious and cultural life of the region before finding a new purpose in the wake of the Reformation.

History+

The monastery of Neunkirchen was founded in 1313 by Leopold von Hirschberg, who at that time served as scholasticus at the collegiate church of St. Gangolph in Bamberg. Following the Reformation, the last canons left the monastery, after which the prince-bishop's court chamber confiscated the property in 1555. From 1642, the former monastic estates were used to finance the Bamberg seminary. Unlike many other monasteries in the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg, the abbey was not completely dissolved. In 1803, Neunkirchen, along with the Prince-Bishopric of Bamberg, became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria.
