Neustift Abbey

Local government

Kloster Neustift, a former Premonstratensian abbey, is situated in Freising, Upper Bavaria. It is renowned for its rich history and impressive architecture, particularly its Rococo church, which now functions as a parish church.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Neustift dates back to 1141. It was established as a provostry and evolved over the centuries, achieving the status of an abbey in 1717. The monastic territory constituted a Hofmark with its own lower jurisdiction. Despite being an exclave almost entirely surrounded by the Prince-Bishopric of Freising, it was not subject to the Freising Prince-Bishop but belonged to the Duchy or Electorate of Bavaria. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization. Following secularization, the buildings served as barracks from 1803 to 1905, and subsequently housed a textile factory, apartments, and offices from 1906 to 1971.

Since 1987, the former monastery complex has been home to the Freising District Office (Landratsamt). The three-story main building was constructed in the late 17th century. To its southeast stands the former monastery library, which retains a coffered ceiling from 1623. East of the monastery building lies the “Klostergarten,” a park. The former festive hall of the monastery now serves as the meeting room for the District Council. The former economic buildings to the west of the monastery are also part of the District Office. The former monastery church, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, has been an independent parish church since 1892. It is considered one of Bavaria's most beautiful Rococo churches, designed around 1700 by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi and renovated after a fire in 1751. The 65-meter-high church tower is a prominent landmark of Freising.
