Neuzelle Abbey

Foundation

Kloster Neuzelle, located in the Oder-Spree district of Brandenburg, is a former Cistercian monastery. Founded in the 13th century, it served as an important spiritual center in the region until the 19th century.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Neuzelle took place in 1268. It was a new establishment originating from the mother monastery Altzella in Saxony. The Cistercian monks who settled here dedicated the monastery to Saint Mary. Over the centuries, Neuzelle developed into an extensive landholding, encompassing numerous villages and estates. A profound event was the attack during the Hussite Wars in 1429, during which the monastery was devastated and monks were killed for refusing to accept the teachings of Jan Hus. These monks have since been revered as martyrs. The monastery existed until its dissolution and secularization in 1817 by the Prussian government.

Kloster Neuzelle is situated in the Oder-Spree district in eastern Brandenburg, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 47 meters above sea level.

Following its secularization, the monastery was transformed into a state-administered foundation. The former monastery church, St. Mariä Himmelfahrt, now functions as a pilgrimage and parish church. In 1996, the Stift Neuzelle Foundation was re-established as a public law foundation of the state of Brandenburg to preserve its cultural heritage.
