Niedernburg Abbey

The origins of Niedernburg Abbey date back to the mid-8th century, when it was founded as a women's collegiate church. Between 788 and 1160, it held the status of an Imperial Abbey, which granted it a special position. In 1161, it lost this imperial immediacy and was subordinated to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. Around 1500, the women's collegiate church transformed into an abbey for Benedictine nuns. The dissolution of the monastery occurred during the secularization in 1806. After a period of reuse as a convent for the English Ladies from 1836 to 2017, discussions are currently underway regarding the future use of the buildings. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Mary.

Niedernburg Abbey is situated in the city of Passau in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 298 meters above sea level. It is nestled within the historic old town.
