Niedernburg Abbey, a historic institution located in the old town of Passau, Bavaria, Germany, looks back on a long and eventful history. It is known for its foundation as a women's collegiate church and its later development into a Benedictine nunnery.

The origins of Niedernburg Abbey date back to the mid-8th century, when it was founded as a women's collegiate church. Between 788 and 1160, it held the status of an Imperial Abbey, which granted it a special position. In 1161, it lost this imperial immediacy and was subordinated to the Prince-Bishopric of Passau. Around 1500, the women's collegiate church transformed into an abbey for Benedictine nuns.
