History+
The origins of the monastery date back to the years 930 to 950, when the “New Castle” was built on this site. In 975, a Benedictine abbey founded in the Harz in 970 was relocated to this fort with the aim of Christianizing the local Sorbian population. After more than 30 years of renovation, the monastery church, which still stands today, was consecrated on August 8, 1004, in the presence of King Henry II. The monastery, declared an imperial abbey by Emperor Otto II, quickly became one of the wealthiest in the region. It owned numerous estates, including Harzgerode and Lübben. In 1166, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa exchanged Nienburg Abbey and Freckleben Castle with the Archbishopric of Magdeburg.
