Nothgottes Abbey

Nothgottes is the name of a former monastery in the Rheingau, in the area of the city of Rüdesheim.

Until secularization, the monastery, which according to legend was founded by Knight Brömser after one of his farmers found the miraculous image of the Blood-Sweating Savior while plowing and at the same time heard the cry "Noth Gottes" (God's Need/Distress), was inhabited by Capuchins.

In the early modern period, Noth Gottes was a popular pilgrimage site. Today, a foot pilgrimage from Kruft arrives in Noth Gottes every year on the first Sunday of September. The pilgrims of the Noth Gottes Brotherhood, whose number now fluctuates between 85 and 110, set off from their hometown two days earlier. The oldest verifiable pilgrimage from Kruft came to Noth Gottes in 1674 and, according to oral tradition, has never been interrupted to this day. A vow made due to a plague epidemic is the basis of the pilgrimage.

Until 2006, the former monastery was an educational center of the Diocese of Limburg. Since then, it has been inhabited by the Community of the Beatitudes, whose presence means that a monastery exists here again after 200 years. The buildings are located between the settlement of Windeck and the Rüdesheim district of Eibingen in the east of the Ebental valley.

Since 2002, the Nothgottes house has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
