Obermedlingen Abbey

The monastery's origins date back to 1251 when Walter II von Faimingen provided estates for its foundation. In 1260, the first 15 nuns moved in, and in 1263, it was assigned to the German province of the Dominican Order. The parishes of Obermedlingen and Untermedlingen were incorporated into the monastery in 1266 and 1337, respectively. During the Bavarian War in 1462, the monastery suffered damage in the Battle of Giengen. The Reformation led to a crisis from 1517; in 1544, a Protestant preacher was appointed, and in 1545, the monastery church burned down. After its dissolution in 1555 and the confiscation of its assets, the monastery was handed over to the Dominicans in 1651 and converted into a male convent. A new church was built between 1666 and 1672. In 1804, the convent was dissolved, and parts of the buildings were demolished. In 1923, the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary moved in and opened a six-grade secondary school.
