Ohrbeck Abbey

The desire for a Franciscan monastery in Holzhausen and Ohrbeck arose after World War I. In 1916, farmer Poggemann provided a four-hectare forest area on the Boberg, and the Prussian government granted the building permit in the same year. The first Franciscans moved into a wooden barracks in June 1918. The construction of the retreat house, the monastery, and the monastery church, designed by architect Johannes Nellesen, was completed in 1926. Bishop Hermann Wilhelm Berning consecrated the monastery church to Saint Anthony of Padua in 1929. During the Nazi regime, the monastery was confiscated by the Gestapo in 1941, and the religious were expelled.
