Osterhofen Abbey

The origins of Kloster Osterhofen date back to between 1004 and 1009, when it was founded as a collegiate church. Initially dedicated to Saint Margaret, it was transformed into a Premonstratensian monastery in 1138. In 1288, it was elevated to an abbey. A fire in 1701 destroyed parts of the complex, which were subsequently rebuilt in a splendid manner under Abbot Paulus Wieninger. Following looting during the Austrian War of Succession in 1744 and increasing insolvency, the monastery was dissolved by papal decree in 1783. The buildings were later sold and acquired by the English Ladies in 1858, who operated a girls' secondary school and vocational schools there until 2015.

Kloster Osterhofen is situated in Altenmarkt, a district of Osterhofen, in the Deggendorf district of Bavaria, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 347 meters above sea level.

The impressive monastery church, designed by Johann Michael Fischer and the Asam brothers, is now a parish church and holds the title of a papal basilica (Basilica minor). The former monastery buildings were used by the English Ladies until 2015.
