Pernegg Abbey

The monastery of Pernegg was founded around 1153 by Ekbert and his son Ulrich II of Pernegg as a convent for canonesses, affiliated with Geras Abbey. It was settled by nuns from Launiowitz Abbey. In 1188, the endowments of Pernegg were transferred to the Bishop of Passau. From 1376, the heads of the convent bore the title of “Prioress”. In the 14th and 15th centuries, the small women's monastery exercised the patronage rights over the parish of Hösting in Moravia. In 1584, the women's monastery was dissolved, and after the death of the last canoness in 1585, the abbey was re-established in 1586 with canons from Geras. In the 17th century, the monastery experienced a revival and was elevated to an abbey in 1700. As part of Emperor Joseph II's religious policies, Pernegg Abbey was secularized in 1783, and its furnishings were auctioned off. In 1854, the abbey buildings were returned to the possession of Geras Abbey. During World War II, Pernegg served as a camp for the Reich Labour Service. From 1951 to 1992, it housed a youth center, before undergoing extensive renovation and expansion.

Kloster Pernegg is located in the municipality of Horn in the federal state of Lower Austria, Austria, at an elevation of approximately 527 meters above sea level.

The former abbey buildings, situated south and west of the towering abbey church, were rebuilt in the 17th century using medieval structural elements. The late Gothic abbey church, the charnel house, and parts of the Baroque monastery buildings have been preserved. In addition to religious services, the abbey church is also used for concerts. Today, Kloster Pernegg serves as a fasting center.
