Pons Mariae Abbey

The Monastery Pons Mariae, also known as Monastery Marienbrück, is a significant sacred building and the landmark of Astheim, a district of Volkach. As a former Carthusian monastery, it shapes the local landscape near the Main River and now houses a museum and the municipal archive of Volkach.
History+
The history of the Monastery Pons Mariae began in 1409 with its foundation by Erkinger I von Seinsheim, who chose Astheim as a burial place for his family. A former manor, which the Knights of Seinsheim had acquired from the Counts of Castell, formed the basis for the monastery complex. As early as 1410, the convent was recognized by the Prince-Bishop of Würzburg. In 1440, the priors of the Carthusian monastery gained secular rule over Astheim. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced numerous destructions and reconstructions, particularly during the German Peasants' War in 1525, when it was plundered and devastated. The Thirty Years' War also left its mark. The final dissolution occurred on June 20, 1803, as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. Subsequently, the property changed hands several times until it was sold to the municipality of Astheim in the 1950s.
