In Mönchengladbach, the Rathaus Abtei is a former Benedictine monastery that now serves as the seat of the city administration. It represents an example of the transformation of a religious building into a center of civic governance.

History+

Construction of the building complex commenced in 1663 and was completed around 1705. In 1802, the monastery was secularized following its occupation by French troops. Subsequently, it functioned as a spinning mill from 1805 to 1835. The city of Mönchengladbach acquired the main building in 1835 and used it as its town hall after the previous town hall on the market square was demolished.
