Reichenbach Abbey

Reichenbach Monastery was founded around 1118 by Margrave Diepold III of Vohburg and his mother Luitgard. Benedictine monks from Kastl Monastery settled the abbey, which developed rapidly in its early decades. The monastery church was consecrated as early as 1135. A fire in 1181 led to a setback, but reconstruction was swift, and imperial and papal letters of protection from 1182 strengthened the monastery's position. In the 13th century, Reichenbach lost regional significance after the Wittelsbachs took over the vogtei, but experienced a renewal of monastic discipline in the 14th century under Abbot Friedrich II Heinrichsreutter.
