Reichsabtei St. Maximin Abbey (Treves)

The foundation of St. Maximin Abbey is dated to no later than 634. It was established at a Christian burial site on the northern cemetery of Roman Trier, where a corresponding building had already been erected in the 4th century. The abbey church, originally dedicated to John the Evangelist, later received the patronage of Maximinus and Agritius. Throughout its history, the monastery was destroyed several times, including in 882 by the Normans and in 1674 by French troops. After a fire in the 13th century, it was rebuilt according to the old floor plan. Between 1680 and 1684, the abbey was rebuilt again under Abbot Alexander Henn and master builder Hans N. Kuckeisen, preserving Gothic forms. The imperial immediacy of the monastery was long disputed until the abbot and convent submitted to the territorial sovereignty of Trier in 1669. In 1802, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization.

St. Maximin Abbey is located in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 132 meters above sea level.

The preserved 17th-century church now serves as a sports hall for a Catholic private school and as a concert venue. Below the church, an ancient burial ground with over 1000 sarcophagi is accessible for group tours.
