The Imperial Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier, Rhineland-Palatinate, was once the largest and most influential of the Benedictine monasteries in the region and is considered one of the oldest monasteries in Western Europe. Of the original building fabric, the entrance portal and the 17th-century church are still preserved today.

History+

The foundation of St. Maximin Abbey is dated to no later than 634. It was established at a Christian burial site on the northern cemetery of Roman Trier, where a corresponding building had already been erected in the 4th century. The abbey church, originally dedicated to John the Evangelist, later received the patronage of Maximinus and Agritius. Throughout its history, the monastery was destroyed several times, including in 882 by the Normans and in 1674 by French troops. After a fire in the 13th century, it was rebuilt according to the old floor plan.
