Kloster Reute

The origins in Reute date back to 801, when a "people's church" was first mentioned, rebuilt after its destruction in 926. In 1403, five women founded the Franciscan convent of Reute, among them the later beatified Elisabeth Achler, known as the "Gute Beth." During the secularization, the convent was dissolved by Joseph II between 1784 and 1786 and became the property of the Princes of Waldburg-Waldsee. The convent was revitalized in 1869 when the Sisters of Mercy, founded in Ehingen an der Donau, acquired the former convent buildings. Since 1871, it has served as the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Reute. A new Art Nouveau motherhouse was opened in 1912, shaping the local landscape as the seat of the order's leadership. The pilgrimage to the Gute Beth evolved into a significant ecclesiastical event in the 1920s. In 1999, the Franciscan Sisters established the St. Elisabeth Foundation. Since 2016, a development process has been underway to shape the future of the convent and Klosterberg. In September 2022, the groundbreaking for the "Klosterbergprojekt Reute" was celebrated, which includes the general renovation of the motherhouse and the creation of apartments by 2027, supported as an innovative project by the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Kloster Reute is located on Klosterberg in the Reute district of Bad Waldsee, nestled in the Upper Swabian landscape within the Ravensburg district, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.

Today, Kloster Reute functions as the motherhouse of the Franciscan Sisters of Reute and remains an active spiritual center. The buildings are undergoing extensive renovation and partial conversion for community-oriented housing projects, while the order's leadership continues to be based in the motherhouse.
