Rila Monastery

The Abbey can be visited

The Rila Monastery, a significant sacred building in Bulgaria, is nestled in the picturesque landscape of the eponymous mountain range. It is not only the largest Orthodox monastery in the country but also a national sanctuary and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its historical importance as a center of the Bulgarian National Revival makes it an indispensable destination for travelers interested in culture and history.

History+

The monastery was founded no later than the first third of the 10th century by Saint Ivan Rilski and his followers. Initially, they lived in caves before the first monastery was established between 927 and 941. In 1335, Sebastokrator Stefan Chrel Dragowoj had a defensive wall, a tower, and a small church built. After the Ottoman conquest of Bulgaria in the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery lost its significance and was plundered and largely destroyed, with only the Hrelyu Tower and the church surviving. At the end of the 15th century, reconstruction took place, and the relics of Saint Ivan Rilski were ceremoniously returned. A major fire in the winter of 1832/33 destroyed the complex again, but thanks to national donations, the monastery was rebuilt in its current form. This reconstruction, which lasted from 1834 to 1860, gave the Rila Monastery new impetus and solidified its role as a pilgrimage destination and refuge for freedom fighters.
