Rohr Abbey

Abbey

Kloster Rohr, a former Augustinian canons' foundation and now a Benedictine abbey, is located in the Bavarian municipality of Rohr.

History+

The foundation of Kloster Rohr dates back to 1133, when the nobleman Adalbert von Rohr transferred his property to the Bishop of Regensburg to establish an Augustinian canons' monastery, which he intended to join himself. Pope Innocent II placed the monastery under apostolic protection in 1136 and confirmed the Augustinian Rule, a confirmation reiterated by Pope Eugene III in 1153. Emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted imperial protection to the monastery in 1158. After a crisis in the 13th century and a period of decline at the beginning of the 15th century, successfully remedied by Provost Petrus Fries from Indersdorf, the monastery suffered severe damage during the War of the Landshut Succession. In the Thirty Years' War, it was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1632 and further devastated by imperial troops in 1648.
