Rot Abbey

The Rot an der Rot Monastery, once an Imperial Abbey of the Premonstratensians, is located in the Upper Swabian municipality of Rot an der Rot in the Biberach district. It is one of the oldest monasteries of its kind in the region and has earned the nickname “Upper Swabian Kremlin.”
History+
The monastery of Rot was probably founded in 1126 by Hemma von Wildenberg as a double monastery. It developed into a mother monastery for numerous Premonstratensian foundations, including Wilten, Schussenried, and Steingaden. In the 15th century, Rot rose to the status of an Imperial Abbey and was represented in the Swabian Imperial Prelates' College from the 16th century onwards. After partial destruction in the Thirty Years' War and a fire in 1681, the entire complex was rebuilt between 1681 and 1698.
