Rott Abbey

The monastery of Rott was founded in 1081. Originally, the foundation was conditional on the family of Count Palatine Kuno I of Rott dying without descendants. After Kuno II of Rott died childless in 1081, the monastic foundation was renewed and placed under papal protection. The monastery was dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, and later, from 1763, to Saints Marinus and Anianus. For centuries, the Benedictine order shaped the life and development of the region. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. Large parts of the complex were subsequently demolished or sold, the extensive forest property was nationalized, and the valuable library was sold. The former abbey church was preserved and now serves as a parish church. A major fire in 1937 destroyed several of the remaining buildings.

Rott Monastery is situated in the municipality of Rott am Inn, in the Bavarian district of Rosenheim. It is located at an altitude of approximately 482 meters above sea level.

The impressive abbey church of St. Marinus and Anianus, a masterpiece of Rococo, was built from 1759 onwards in place of the Romanesque basilica and consecrated in 1763. It now serves as the parish church of Rott am Inn. The altar sculptures by Ignaz Günther and the frescoes by Matthäus Günther bear witness to the high artistic quality of the furnishings. The unique harmony of space, furnishings, and program is the result of a collaboration of important artists of South German Rococo under Abbot Benedikt II Lutz. In the former west wing of the complex, which housed the monastic brewery since 1650, it was privatized after secularization and rebuilt after a fire in 1937.
