St. George's Abbey in the Black Forest

The establishment of Sankt Georgen monastery occurred during the Investiture Controversy and resulted from the collaboration between Swabian nobility and the ecclesiastical reform movement. The brothers Hezelo and Hesso, along with Abbot Wilhelm of Hirsau, played crucial roles in its creation. Although another location was initially considered, Sankt Georgen was chosen at Wilhelm's insistence. The monastery's history began with the settlement of monks from Hirsau in 1084 and the consecration of the monastic chapel in 1085. Under Abbot Theoger (1088–1119), Sankt Georgen rose to become one of the leading monasteries in Southwest Germany. Through donations, purchases, and exchanges, the monastery significantly expanded its possessions, which stretched across Swabia and Alsace, securing the material foundation for monastic life. The vogtei, the secular protection of the monastery, was initially held by the founders and later by the Zähringers. After the extinction of the Zähringers in 1218, the vogtei passed to King Frederick II. Papal privileges, such as the “Roman freedom,” ensured the monastery's direct subordination to the papacy and protected it from secular and episcopal claims, solidifying its position as a reform center of Benedictine monasticism.

Sankt Georgen monastery is situated in the Schwarzwald-Baar district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 801 meters above sea level.

The former abbey is now a historical monument, its significance for regional history and Benedictine monasticism remaining evident.
