The Monastery of Sankt Maria Porten, a historic sacred building in Donau-Ries, Bavaria, is notable for its eventful history and its role as a spiritual center. Originally inhabited by Franciscan Tertiaries, it reflects the religious development of the region.
History+
The Monastery of Sankt Maria Porten was founded in 1591 by Barbara von Bernhausen on the grounds of Hochaltingen Castle. It served as a home for Tertiaries of the Franciscan Observants. During the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1807 due to its modest possessions. A revival of the monastic presence occurred in 1862 through a donation from Princess Georgine von Öttingen-Spielberg and Princess Mother Amalie, who brought two Tertiaries from Pirmasens to the hospital of Hochaltingen Castle and entrusted them with its administration. In 1899, the Franciscan Sisters of Dillingen acquired the entire Hochaltingen Castle and established a new monastery there.
