The Dominican convent of Sankt Peter in Bludenz, Vorarlberg, is the oldest still-existing monastery in this Austrian region. It is located on the eastern outskirts of the city, marking the entrance to the Montafon and Klostertal valleys.

History+

The origins of the monastery date back to 1278, when Count Hugo I of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg founded a new church. Construction of the monastery began in 1286 and was expanded until 1354. For a long time, it served as a provision institution for noble daughters and later for the bourgeois and peasant upper classes of the surrounding area. A plague epidemic in 1560 almost completely decimated the sisterhood. After fires in 1552 and 1576, Dominican nuns from the Hirschthal monastery took over the complex. During the Prättigau War in 1622, most of the sisters fled.
