Sankt Sebastian Abbey

The origins of the Capuchin order in Augsburg date back to 1601 with the founding of the first monastery, St. Francis and Blessed Gualfardus. This early monastery, consecrated in 1602, existed until its dissolution during the secularization in 1809. Concurrently, a chapel dedicated to Saint Sebastian was built in 1611, designed by Elias Holl, serving as a hospital chapel. After its destruction during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt multiple times. The Capuchins returned to Augsburg in 1843, settling in the area around St. Sebastian's Church. The infirmary was elevated to a convent in 1908. Between 1907 and 1909, the monastery was expanded, and the present Neo-Romanesque church was constructed. The Monastery of Saint Sebastian was dissolved in 2008.

The Monastery of Saint Sebastian is located in the city of Augsburg in the federal state of Bavaria, Germany. It is situated in the Oberhausen district, on the right bank of the Wertach river, at an elevation of approximately 473 meters above sea level.

The former monastic church of St. Sebastian is one of the few churches in Augsburg that survived World War II without significant damage and is now a protected monument. It is a three-aisled pillar basilica in Neo-Romanesque style, with its interior adorned with Art Nouveau frescoes. The church houses important artworks, including a larger-than-life Madonna by Hans Degler and the relics of Saints Wolfhard and Luzius. Today, the church is co-managed by the parish of St. Georg and also serves the Croatian church community and hosts services in the Slavic-Byzantine rite.
