Monasterio de la Real

The monastery was founded in 1236, shortly after King James II of Aragon conquered the Kingdom of Mallorca. Pope Gregory IX had encouraged its establishment, and as a daughter monastery of Poblet, it belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux. Count Nuño Sans provided the order with lands, including the estate of Alpich de Esporles and other properties in Deià and Manacor. Initially, the monks settled in Sa Granja but moved to the city area of Palma just three years later. At the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, the philosopher Ramon Llull lived in this monastery.
