Kloster Schamhaupten

The foundation of Schamhaupten Monastery took place in 1137 by Gertrud von Schamhaupten and her daughter Liutgard. The first Augustinian Canons who settled here came from Rohr and the collegiate church of St. Johann in Regensburg. Over the centuries, the monastery struggled with financial difficulties, which could not be permanently resolved even with the arrival of canons from Rebdorf and Bernried. From 1555 onwards, the monastery was uninhabited and was finally dissolved in 1606. The monastery's lands and assets were granted to the University of Ingolstadt with papal approval. Since 1471, the site also served as a burial place for the Muggenthaler family.

The former monastery is situated in the present-day district of Schamhaupten, part of the municipality of Altmannstein, nestled in the Bavarian landscape. It belongs to the Diocese of Regensburg and is located near the city of Eichstätt.

The former monastery church, dedicated to Saint George, still exists today and, after several alterations and renovations, is used as a Catholic parish church. The choir of the church dates from the 15th century, while the nave was rebuilt in 1654. Of the original monastery buildings, only some structural remnants have been preserved, integrated into newer structures.
