Kloster Schinna

The foundation of Kloster Schinna took place in 1148 by Count Wilbrand I of Loccum-Hallermund. The consecration of the complex, dedicated to Saint Vitus, occurred in 1153 and was confirmed by the Bishop of Minden in 1155. By 1234, at least seven monks resided in the convent. The monastery joined the Bursfelde Congregation in 1466. In the early 16th century, the monastery faced pressure from the Counts of Hoya, leading to a prohibition on admitting novices and the loss of control over its lands. Following the death of Abbot Friedrich von Soltau in 1537, secularization was sought but prevented by the General Chapter of the Bursfelde Congregation. The Reformation took hold in Schinna from 1542, when a Lutheran pastor was appointed and the convent comprised only five members. The dissolution of the monastery occurred around 1567.

The former Kloster Schinna is situated in the Schinna district of the unitary municipality of Stolzenau in the Lower Saxony district of Nienburg/Weser, Germany.

The current building stock of the former monastery includes four structures: the abbot's house, the western and southern wings of the convent building, and a half-timbered church. The two surviving convent buildings date from the 13th and 14th centuries and were used for agricultural purposes after their monastic function. The current half-timbered church was erected around 1539/40, following the demolition of the original Gothic monastery church. Archaeological excavations between 2009 and 2011 uncovered the foundations of the eastern convent building and parts of the Romanesque monastery church.
