Schlehdorf Abbey

Kloster Schlehdorf, situated on the northern edge of the Bavarian Alps in the district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, is a historic complex with a long and varied history. It is located in close proximity to Lake Kochel and is characterized by its picturesque setting.
History+
The foundation of Kloster Schlehdorf, dedicated to Saints Dionysius, Tertulinus, and Peter, occurred in the 8th century, specifically between 763 and 772, by the noble family of the Huosi. It is considered a successor monastery to the burnt-down Scharnitz. Initially a Benedictine monastery, it transformed into a collegiate church in the 10th century and became an Augustinian canons' monastery from 1140. Between 1717 and 1725, the complex underwent extensive Baroque expansion. In the course of secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803, and its buildings were sold. From 1904, the Missionary Dominican Sisters of Qonce revitalized monastic life, using the buildings, which were expanded in 1926/1927, as the seat of their German provincial house. At the end of 2019, the historic building was sold by the Dominicans to a cooperative, with the monastery church and the secondary school not being part of the sale.
