Kloster Schlüchtern, a former Benedictine abbey, is located in the Main-Kinzig district of Hesse. The complex, whose origins date back to the High Middle Ages, is now an important center for education and church music.

History+

The first documented mention of Kloster Schlüchtern dates back to the year 993, with its consecration attributed to the Holy Mary. A crypt from the early Carolingian period testifies to even older building fabric. After a dispute in 1116, the monks gained the right to elect their own abbot. The abbey's heyday extended through the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1213, St. Michael's Church was integrated into the monastic complex. Around 1567, the monastery was dissolved as part of the Reformation.
