Schlüsselau Abbey

Around 1280, Eberhard IV von Schlüsselberg and his son Konrad I founded a Cistercian nunnery in Seppendorf, now Schlüsselau. Gottfried von Schlüsselberg supplemented the endowment, which was confirmed in 1290 by Bamberg Bishop Arnold von Solms. The monastery served the Schlüsselberg family as a house monastery with its own burial site and provided an economic basis for unmarried daughters from noble families. The number of nuns was around 20. Gottfried von Schlüsselberg, whose high tomb is in the church, is considered the builder. The church was completed by 1350 and consecrated to the Sorrowful Trinity. Under Abbess Anna von Schlüsselberg (1339-1379), the monastery achieved a stable economic foundation.
