Kloster Schongau

The Schongau Monastery was founded around 1719 by the Discalced Carmelites, who had already been running a Latin school since 1705. The monastery church, dedicated to Saint Anne, was built between 1720 and 1725 under the direction of the Wessobrunn artist Joseph Schmuzer. It features six side altars, with the altarpiece of the main altar created by Gottfried Göz. An organ from 1735 completed the interior. In the course of secularization, the Carmelite monastery was dissolved in 1802, and the convent moved to Reisach. In 1812, the city of Schongau acquired the buildings and relocated the seat of the Heiliggeist Hospital Foundation there. The former monastery church subsequently received the patronage of the Holy Spirit and served as a hospital church.
