Schussenried Abbey

The Schussenried Monastery, a former imperial abbey in Upper Swabia, is located in Bad Schussenried in the Biberach district. It was once a Premonstratensian canonry and is now known for its Baroque hall, considered one of the main attractions on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route.
History+
The history of Schussenried Monastery began in 1183 when Konrad and Beringer von Schussenried transferred their manor to the Premonstratensian Order, as they had no heirs. This marked the foundation of the canonry by the Premonstratensian Abbey of Rot an der Rot. Construction of the convent church began around 1185. After initial inheritance disputes and a temporary flight of the convent, which were settled by papal assistance and a compromise in 1205, the monastery received a papal protection privilege in 1211. Under Provost Konrad II (1223-1248), the church and monastery were consecrated, and its possessions were expanded with additional estates and patronage rights. In the 15th century, the monastery became imperial and gained high and blood jurisdiction in 1512.
