Seemannshausen Abbey

The foundation of Seemannshausen Monastery took place on April 20, 1255, by Heinrich Seemann, Dean of Regensburg Cathedral, at the noble seat of Pölnkofen. It was initially dedicated to the Wilhelmites. As early as February 2, 1263, Bishop Leo Thundorfer of Regensburg ordered the Wilhelmites to switch to the Order of Augustinian Hermits. Seemannshausen was a place for the order: On May 27, 1264, the first chapter of the German province of the Augustinian Hermits took place here, a role it also held in 1343, 1420, 1621, 1629, and 1633. It is presumed that the first German Provincial Engelbert (1265-1273/75) originated from this convent. Duke Heinrich XIV of Lower Bavaria elevated Seemannshausen to a monastic manor on September 3, 1335.
