Seeon Abbey

The former Benedictine monastery of Seeon, situated on an island, is an example of Romanesque and late Gothic architecture in Bavaria. Once a center of scholarship and culture, it now serves as a cultural and educational hub.
History+
Towards the end of the 11th century, a new Romanesque monastery building was constructed, which, however, lasted for only about a century. Around 1180, the current church with its apse in the east was erected. Between 1428 and 1433, a late Gothic reconstruction was carried out by Konrad Pürkhel from Burghausen, during which the Romanesque column basilica was vaulted and a new choir was added. The Renaissance frescoes from 1579 depict scenes from the lives of Christ and Mary, as well as the patron saints Benedict and Lambert, and the monastery founders Aribo and Adala. In the 17th century, from 1657 to 1670, the church was expanded with a sacristy, a prayer choir, and a crypt.
