Seligental Abbey

Seligental Monastery was founded in 1236 by Konrad von Dürn and his wife Mechthild von Lauffen. It was conceived as a nunnery for noblewomen and was under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Würzburg. As early as 1239, the monastery church was consecrated to the Mother of God. The nuns lived according to the Benedictine rules in a Cistercian form. After the death of the last abbess Amalia Schelmin von Bergen in 1561 and influenced by raids during the Peasants' War and the Reformation in the region, the monastery was dissolved in 1568. Attempts at revival in 1613 failed due to the resistance of the Archbishop of Mainz. In the course of secularization, Seligental fell to the Principality of Leiningen in 1803. The former monastery church burned down in 1928, after having served as a sheepfold and barn.
